1. Nickel and nickel alloy electrodes are mainly used for welding nickel and high-nickel alloys, as well as for dissimilar metal welding and surfacing. The groove dimensions and welding processes for the joints are similar to those of nickel-chromium austenitic steels. Three key points should be noted during welding:
① Nickel and nickel alloys have poor thermal conductivity, making them prone to overheating and grain growth during welding. Therefore, use a relatively small welding current, avoid transverse electrode oscillation as much as possible, fill the crater completely when stopping the arc, and maintain a low interpass temperature.
② Nickel is highly susceptible to embrittlement by sulfur and lead, which can cause hot cracks. Strictly control the sulfur and lead content in the electrodes. Thoroughly clean the base metal surface before welding to remove oil, paint, dust, and other contaminants.
③ Nickel and nickel alloys are sensitive to porosity formation during welding. Electrodes should contain appropriate deoxidizers such as aluminum, titanium, and manganese. Control the arc length during operation.

2. Precautions for using nickel-based alloy electrodes:
① Clean the base metal surface thoroughly to remove moisture, oil, rust, pen marks, and other contaminants.
② Dry the electrodes before use at 300–350°C for 60 minutes.
③ Minimize heat input. If electrode oscillation is necessary, limit the width to within 2.5 times the electrode diameter.
④ Control the welding speed to prevent slag inclusions.
⑤ For vertical welding, use the intermittent arc welding method to prevent molten metal from sagging.
⑥ Control the interpass temperature, preferably below 100°C.
⑦ Fill the arc crater completely to prevent crater cracks. If cracks occur, grind them with a grinder before continuing welding.
