Instructions:
1. Cast iron electrodes have high carbon content, uneven microstructure, low strength, and extremely poor plasticity, making them materials with poor weldability. Cracking is extremely likely to occur during welding; the cooling rate after welding is extremely fast, prone to producing white structure, causing difficulties in cutting processing.
2. Reference for conventional welding processes and materials:
a. Grey cast iron – Use small current and fast welding to reduce penetration depth and lower the fusion ratio; adopt short-segment welding, intermittent welding, dispersed welding, and segmental backstep welding, and hammer the weld seam; welding should start from the part with high rigidity. Welding materials can be Z308 and Z408.
b. Ductile cast iron – Use large current: \( I = (30–60)D \), continuous welding; slow cooling after welding is necessary, and heat treatment (normalizing or annealing) can be carried out. Welding material can be Z408.
c. Malleable cast iron – Adopt processes similar to grey cast iron. Welding material can be Z308.
d. Vermicular graphite cast iron – Adopt processes similar to grey cast iron. Welding material can be Z308.
e. White cast iron – Adopt processes similar to ductile cast iron. Welding materials can be Z308 and Z408.
3. The following welding processes are recommended for reference in cast iron welding and repair:
a. First, remove dirt such as oil sludge, sand, moisture, and rust from the welding area; for cast iron parts that have long been exposed to high-temperature or steam environments, also remove the surface decarbonized layer and oxide layer.
b. According to the shape of the welded part and the type of defect, carry out preparation measures such as groove opening, crack arrest hole drilling, and molten pool shaping.
c. Preheat the workpiece to 500–600°C, select appropriate current, and carry out continuous welding. Maintain the preheating temperature throughout the welding process. After welding, immediately cover with thermal insulation materials such as asbestos to allow slow cooling, thereby improving crack resistance and machinability.
d. For cold welding workpieces, to prevent excessive melting of the base metal, reduce white structure tendency, and avoid excessive heat concentration causing excessive stress, use small current, short arc, and narrow bead welding (each bead length generally not exceeding 50mm) as much as possible. Hammer the weld seam immediately after welding to relieve stress and prevent cracking, and weld the next bead after the temperature drops below 60°C.
e. Pay attention to filling the arc crater when ending the weld to prevent cracking at the arc termination site.
