Instructions:
1. Surfacing is a welding process that deposits a layer of metal with wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant, heat-resistant and other properties on the surface or edge of a workpiece. It can repair and improve the service life of parts, reasonably use materials, improve product performance, and has significant economic benefits in cost reduction. The working conditions of surfacing are very complex, and it is necessary to select appropriate electrodes according to different requirements. Different workpieces and surfacing electrodes require different surfacing processes to achieve satisfactory surfacing results.
2. The most common problem in surfacing is cracking. The main methods to prevent cracking are:
① Preheating before welding, controlling interlayer temperature, and slow cooling after welding.
② Post-weld stress-relief heat treatment.
③ Using low-hydrogen surfacing electrodes to avoid cracking in multi-layer surfacing.
④ When necessary, depositing a transition layer between the surfacing layer and the base metal (using electrodes with low carbon equivalent and high toughness).
Cracking is directly related to the carbon content of the workpiece and the deposited metal in the weld, as well as alloying elements. Therefore, the preheating temperature is generally estimated based on the carbon equivalent of the electrode used. The carbon equivalent formula is as follows:

3. This estimation formula is suitable for low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel and low-alloy steel materials.

For high-manganese steel and austenitic stainless steel, preheating may not be required. The preheating temperature for high-alloy steel should be greater than 400°C.
The surfacing effect, including the hardness, wear resistance, and heat resistance of the weld layer, is related to the following factors:
① The magnitude of welding current and the length of the arc. A large current and long arc easily cause burning loss of alloying elements; conversely, a small current and short arc are beneficial for the transition of alloying elements.
② Preheating temperature and slow cooling conditions determine the quality of the surfacing layer.
③ Different heat treatment methods for certain surfacing metals can result in different hardness levels.
